Tender ziti pasta is layered with a savory Italian sausage sauce, creamy ricotta, and a generous sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. It’s a crowd-pleaser that’s perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings. Serve it with garlic bread and a fresh salad for a complete meal

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (454 g) ziti pasta
  • 1 lb (454 g) Italian sausage, casings removed

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 large onion, diced

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 24 oz (680 g) marinara sauce

  • 1 cup (240 g) ricotta cheese

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 cup (100 g) grated Parmesan cheese

  • 2 cups (200 g) shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp dried basil

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.

  2. Cook Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add ziti and cook until al dente, according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

  3. Prepare Sausage Sauce:

    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

    • Add sausage and cook until browned. Break it apart with a spoon.

    • Add onions and garlic; sauté until softened.

    • Pour in marinara sauce, oregano, and basil. Simmer for 10 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

  4. Prepare Ricotta Mixture:

    • In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth.

  5. Assemble the Ziti:

    • Spread a thin layer of sauce at the bottom of the baking dish.

    • Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce.

    • Spoon half of the ricotta mixture over the ziti.

    • Spread half of the sauce over the ricotta mixture.

    • Sprinkle 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.

    • Repeat the layers: ziti, ricotta mixture, sauce, and top with remaining mozzarella cheese.

  6. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until cheese is golden and bubbly.

  7. Garnish and Serve: Let the baked ziti rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

Substitute sausage with ground beef or turkey for a lighter version.

Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
